I will suggest you to start by investing in etf which covers major index like sp500, dow ,nasdaq or you can a particular sector too by investing in it through etf.

Many people like @Cart_Watson suggested best to start with ETFs if you don’t actively research stocks
If you do however want to pick stocks then best is to pick 2-4 companies to start off with that operate in a sector you understand and with business models you understand
One doesn’t need to pick only mid-cap companies in the US to make alpha generating returns, can look at good large caps as well. Warren Buffett isn’t afraid to take large stakes in large caps. Check Berkshire for some ideas.
Lastly, for diversification overall one can look to invest some percentage internationally
